One variety of curtain screen works up and down, like a window-shade, instead of across. Its screen of fine bronze wire disappears into a roller housing, placed across the top of the fireplace opening or concealed behind its lintel. It is raised and lowered by pulling on a continuous chain, which is something of a nuisance. But it is self-storing and out of sight when you don’t want anything between you and the fire. They’re expensive (36″ wide, about $110).
In addition to satin or matte black, screen frames come in more than a dozen different finishes and metals, including brass, copper, steel, and bronze. Avoid bright-finish framing unless you want to call attention to it. As for the screening itself, the most popular choice is matte black. It lets you see the fire better and is less obtrusive. If you rarely use your fireplace and prefer to hide the litter that has a way of collecting there, you may want a brass or other bright-finish screening. you’ll see the screen instead of what’s behind it. Hanging a brass screen from the mantle is a way of concealing an unattractive fireplace front.
