Although there are a few antique Victorian fan Screens still around, the English traditionally burned coal in their fireplaces and so seldom had need for a screen. Coal cracks as it burns, and tiny pieces shoot out, but these bits aren’t glowing. When coal glows, it fuses, and longer spits. The French burned faggots and did use screens. You can buy antique French standing screens of ornate design $275 up. But they were designed for tiny fireplace, and are of little practical value today.
For today’s fireplace many types of screens are offered. In buying, obviously the first thing to consider is safety. If a screen isn’t insurance, what good is it? The only problem is just how much of a compromise to make between safety on the one hand and convenience and esthetics on the other. Ideally, a screen should combine all three.
