Did you know? In some Asian cultures people have historically not used bed frames. These "platform" beds are especially common in Japan and use a futon mattress! There are a number of different bed and mattress types that are used around the world.
There are many different interpretations of such definitions, although these are the most common. When you buy a bed make sure you know the dimensions of the mattress. If you are purchasing designer bedding sets for your existing beds, then measure the length and width of the mattress.
Because we all spend one third of our lives in bed it is important that we get a good restful night of sleep. Many flat beds are very uncomfortable and many people do not get a recuperative restful sleep which is important for alertness and overall well being. Many who sleep on a conventional flat bed wake up un-rested with all kinds of aches and pains that can affect every part their daily lives.
Space is actually a problem with many of us. To make sure that every square inch of the available space can be put to optimum use, the furniture designers and manufacturers have developed different innovative ideas and a bunk bed is just an example of it. You find them in ships, army garrisons, hostel dormitories, university residence halls, summer camp cabins, and even in some homes, where there are more children than there are bedrooms.
Then look at your current décor - is that to be retained or changed to suit the bed? People do not generally redecorate their bedroom when they need a new bed! Is natural wood best, or would prefer it to be colored - painted or upholstered. These questions can only be answered by you, and your answers will determine the style and finish of your new bed headboard.
Make sure that your designer bedding is rated for your size of bed, or alternatively that its dimensions are sufficient to meet your personal needs. Some people like lots of bedding hanging over the mattress so they can cuddle in and get comfortable. If you are using a flat sheet, then that should be of a size sufficient to tuck under the mattress all round - or be elastically fitted to it.
One option is a detached style which is attached to the wall, the bed being pushed hard up against it. A potential problem with these is that when you come to replace your bed, you either have to redecorate the wall or use a new board of the same size and shape - or even keep the same headboard! You can also get floor-standing versions that are not fixed - a better option than wall-mounted styles.
Nevertheless, the most popular styles of headboards are crafted in solid wood - oak, cherry, maple, mahogany and American walnut are five of the more popular woods. These are normally paneled, and may also display some form of decorative carving. Upholstered versions are frequently deep buttoned, sometimes tufted to give the headboard a quilted appearance.
Loft beds are similar to the bunks mentioned above, but do not have a lower bed. This space is used instead for storage or as a play area. A captain’s bed looks like a normal frame bed, but has storage drawers built into the base. This type is often referred to as a chest or cabin bed. A camp bed (also "cot") is a simple, temporary and portable, which is used by armies and large organizations in times of crisis.
The style of the headboard can be used as the focal point of a bedroom. Some people prefer this to be in a color that contrasts or clashes with the main color theme of a room. For example, a bright red panel in a room otherwise decorated with pink or earth pastel shades.
Many Americans prefer just the comforter, although a duvet is generally thicker and warmer. With either, you need lots of width and length to cover the mattress and then lots more! Note that the comforter should be a good two feet or more greater in width than the mattress and 8-12 inches longer. A duvet is often shorter and less wide than a comforter, but still larger than the mattress.
